Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Danville, Illinois

The city of Danville is located approximately 120 miles south of Chicago near the Indiana state border and is home to over 34,000 people. Prominent Danville citizens, Guy W. Smith and Dan W. Beckwith, founded the city in 1827 on 80 acres of land and helped form the roots of what would soon become a major industrial city.

For nearly a century, from the 1850s to 1940s, Danville played a key role in the coal mining industry. The open-pit mining technique was first employed at local Decatur companies such as the Assumption Coal Company, Franklin Cole & Coke Mine, and St. Paul Coal Company. The open-pit technique was new to the industry and offered an alternative to the usual extractive method of tunneling into the earth. As a result of Danville’s active mining industry, the Chicago and Eastern Illinois Railway Company and the Danville Urbana and Champaign Railway Company laid tracks through the city. In 1943, World War II led the Defense Plant Corporation to sign a lease with General Motors to construct a foundry in Danville; the plant became known as Central Foundries Div GMC and the iron began flowing. In years following the height of Danville’s mining industry, many of the sites were filled in and converted to lakes, fishing, and recreational areas such as Kickapoo State Recreation Area and Kennekuk Cove County Park.
