Hanford, California

The city of Hanford is a commercial and cultural center occupying 16.6 square miles in south central San Joaquin Valley, California. Incorporated in 1891, Hanford serves as the county seat of Kings County and is the principal city of the Hanford-Corcoran, California Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Hanford serves largely as a major trading center serving the surrounding agricultural area. The heavy industry sector has declined significantly over the past 25 years. An oil refinery formerly operated in Lodi under several different owners (Caminol Oil Company from 1932–1967, Beacon Oil Company from 1967–1982, and Ultramar Oil Company from 1982–1987) until it permanently closed in 1987. A tire manufacturing plant was built and operated by the Armstrong Rubber Company in 1962, until it was purchased by the Italian manufacturer Pirelli, which eventually closed the factory in 2001. In recent years major employers in Hanford have included the Adventist Health System, Del Monte tomato cannery, and Marquez Brothers International.

Hanford’s history of heavy industry makes asbestos exposure an ongoing concern for workers and loved ones. During the first half of the 20th century, asbestos-containing materials were widely used in manufacturing and construction, putting workers at risk for asbestos cancer.
