MaineHealth Maine Medical Center Portland

Maine Medical Center (MMC) has evolved significantly since its founding:

  • 1874: Maine General Hospital, the state’s first hospital, opened in Portland.
  • 1951: Maine General Hospital formed MMC by merging with Maine Eye and Ear Infirmary and Children’s Hospital.
  • Late 1990s: Maine Medical Center Foundation, the center’s parent organization, formed a unified health system under MaineHealth (MH), making MMC the system’s flagship location.
  • 2022: One of its divisions, the MMC Research Institute, became the MaineHealth Institute for Research. It is recognized as a leading biomedical research center.
  • 2024: MMC and Southern Maine Health Care joined to form MaineHealth Maine Medical Center (MHMMC), a multi-campus system with primary locations in Biddeford, Portland and Sanford.

Now the largest medical center in the state, MHMMC has locations across Maine that connect patients to a broad range of specialty providers and services. The center employs approximately 9,000 people and operates 929 beds across its three campuses.

MHMMC functions as an academic medical center that offers education and clinical training. It is affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine (TUSM) through the Maine Track MD program. This curriculum was developed in partnership with and exclusively for TUSM.

As a not-for-profit health system, MaineHealth focuses on community health and coordinated care. MHMMC continues to expand its programs to best serve patients and families throughout Maine and beyond.
