Doctor Overview

Dr. Barry Gibney is a cardiothoracic surgeon. Dr. Gibney’s specialty focuses on heart and chest cavity conditions, including treatment of cancers that affect the chest. These include mesothelioma, lung cancer and esophageal cancer. He specializes in minimally invasive thoracic surgery.

He treats patients at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston. Dr. Gibney also practices at MUSC locations in Okatie, South Carolina, and Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. In addition to treating patients, he teaches surgery and is the Program Director for the Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency.

Before his current role, Dr. Gibney worked at several prominent hospitals. He conducted surgical research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. The hospital is part of the Harvard Medical School and ranks fourth in the nation for cancer treatment according to U.S. News & World Report. He also completed his residency and internship at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. This center is part of Penn State Health in Hershey, Pennsylvania, which is considered one of the best medical facilities in the state.
