History of Van Elslander Cancer Center
Van Elslander Cancer Center is located in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Part of St. John Hospital and Medical Center, Van Elslander Cancer Center is a teaching hospital and trauma center that serves the greater eastern Detroit area.
The Van Elslander Cancer Center opened in 2001. It is dedicated to providing the highest quality comprehensive care services available. The center offers a wide range of services, including:

02. Mesothelioma Care
Mesothelioma Care at Van Elslander Cancer Center
Van Elslander Cancer Center provides several options for mesothelioma care and treatment. At this cancer center, doctors and nurses create and deliver a personalized treatment and support plan. A patient’s team may include:

- Radiation specialists
- Surgical oncologists
- Oncology-certified nurses
- Palliative care specialists
- Genetic counselors
- Dietitians
- Rehabilitation therapists
Throughout a patient’s treatment they will have a dedicated nurse practitioner, nurse navigator and a certified cancer dietitian to provide support and guidance.
The center also has a designated Peritoneal Malignancies Program, where peritoneal mesothelioma patients can be treated. Surgical oncologists at Van Elslander Cancer Center specialize in heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). HIPEC is a heated chemotherapy wash administered to the abdominal cavity after surgery to remove tumors and lesions. It is a common treatment for peritoneal mesothelioma.
Under the direction of Dr. Richard Berri, Director of the Surgical Oncology and Peritoneal Malignancies Program, St. John Hospital has grown to be one of the largest HIPEC Programs in the United States.
