History of Masonic Cancer Center – University of Minnesota

The Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota was established in 1991, and is part of a larger health care and education facility that includes the Medical School, College of Pharmacy, School of Public Health and more. The Masonic Cancer Center is one of 70 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation.

The Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota utilizes the latest technology to offer mesothelioma patients the best cancer care. In addition to their years of experience with traditional treatment methods, like lung surgery, radiation and chemotherapy, many specialists at the center are helping to lead research through clinical trials to advance diagnostic methods and therapies available for patients with all types of thoracic cancers.

The Masonic Cancer Center is dedicated to providing patients with personalized treatment plans based on their individual case, including their age, overall health, mesothelioma stage and type. In addition to their ability to offer a wide range of conventional and emerging therapies, the center also strives to provide numerous supportive services to ensure the mental and emotional wellbeing of patients. They offer integrative therapies for symptom management, complementary medicines to help with treatment side effects like acupuncture and breath work, physical wellness programs to help patients get stronger and overcome fatigue and a variety of support groups to bolster emotional wellness.

The center also offers a cancer information phone line where patients can call to ask questions about cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, available clinical trials and get help finding support groups. The thoracic cancer team is actively involved in national and regional cancer trials for a variety of thoracic cancers. Clinical research and treatment partners include the University’s Stem Cell Institute, Center for Immunology, Center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging and the Institute of Human Genetics.
