Hattiesburg is the fourth-largest city in Mississippi, with a resident population of over 50,000, and is the seat of Forrest County. Founded as a station stop for the New Orleans and North Eastern Railroad, Hattiesburg has developed into a thriving city, offering a mix of industry, education and cultural opportunities. Hattiesburg is home to two universities, William Carey University and the University of Southern Michigan. It is also the site of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, which has provided field training for several branches of the U.S. Armed Forces and the National Guard and Reserve since 1917. Hattiesburg's historic district encompasses a variety of architectural styles from late Victorian to the 1930s. Stops along the Mississippi Blues Trail and the Freedom Summer Trail highlight Hattiesburg's contributions to American music and the Civil Rights movement. Several shopping centers, pleasant residential neighborhoods and nearly two dozen parks, including the Hattiesburg Zoo, characterize the city today.

Named after the wife of founder William H. Hardy, Hattiesburg was formally settled in 1882 and incorporated as a city in 1884. Located at the juncture of the Bouie and Leaf Rivers, Hattiesburg's prominence as a Southern Railway System hub grew with the addition of the Gulf and Ship Island Railway. By 1912, Hattiesburg was an important rail center, earning it the nickname "Hub City." In the 20th century, the city became more economically diverse, adding chemical plants and major medical facilities such as Wesley Medical Center, which dates back to 1900, and Forrest General Hospital, established in 1952. During the 1960s, as part of a seismic detection methods project, two nuclear devices were detonated under the Tatum Salt Dome. Although Hurricane Katrina has had an impact on Hattiesburg's population and resources, it maintains a diverse mix of industry, with current employers including Western Container, Kohler Engines, Hattiesburg Paper Company, Hybrid Plastics and packaging manufacturer Rexam.
