Asbestos at Lion Oil Company

The Lion Oil Company established the El Dorado refinery in 1922. This refinery produces a wide range of petroleum products, including fuels, oil-based roofing products, solvents and asphalt. Many residents of El Dorado were employed by Lion Oil and exposed to asbestos at this jobsite.

Because petroleum is a highly flammable substance, Lion Oil Company, like other oil refineries, used asbestos products to manage heat and chemical resistance. The mineral was used in refinery equipment and the protective gear provided to its employees. Items such as pipes, insulation, gaskets and fireproof clothing were sources of potential exposure for workers.

Workers at Lion Oil Company have been exposed to asbestos since the refinery’s establishment in 1922. This exposure placed employees and residents at an increased risk for developing mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases.

Today, Lion Oil Company’s El Dorado location employs nearly 400 individuals. Some of these employees may still be at risk for asbestos exposure from any equipment or materials produced before 1980. Maintenance and repair of any equipment or structures containing asbestos may cause the fibers to become airborne. Those working in close proximity risk inhaling or ingesting the airborne fibers.
