Little Rock is the capital city of Arkansas. With a population of just over 193,500, it is also the largest city in the state and the county seat of Pulaski County. Located on the Arkansas River, Little Rock takes its name from a stone outcropping which was used as a landmark by early river navigators. Intellectual capital is an important commodity in Little Rock, which, as a center of business and government, is headquarters to companies such as Dillard’s department stores, Metropolitan National Bank, and Heifer International. Little Rock is also home to two campuses of the University of Arkansas, as well as two historically black colleges, Philander Smith College and Arkansas Baptist College. Local attractions include the Aerospace Education Center, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, and the Quapaw Quarter districts of historic homes, showcasing more than 100 National Register of Historic Places-listed structures.

Founded in 1722 by a French trader, Little Rock at first was no more than a trading post and river crossing. In 1821, Little Rock became the capital of the recently formed Arkansas Territory, and began to develop as a center of government and professional businesses. The Rose Law Firm, still active today, has its roots in a law practice founded in 1820. In 1831, Little Rock was incorporated as a city, and in 1836 became the official capital as Arkansas joined the union. Industry in Little Rock developed slowly, and it was not until the late 19th century that Little Rock industry began to grow. In 1929, Arkansas Power & Light was incorporated, supplying electricity to 197 communities in Arkansas. They also operated an electric streetcar service. The 1960s saw the beginning of a construction boom that lasted through the 1980s, producing a number of skyscrapers, including the Worthen Bank, Union National and First National Bank buildings. Prominent Little Rock manufacturers include Dassault Falcon Jet, Raytheon Aircraft Company and LM Glasfiber.
