History of Willis-Knighton Cancer Center

Willis-Knighton Cancer Center is part of the Willis-Knighton Health System, which has a long and storied history. In 1924, Dr. T.E. Williams and Dr. L.H. Pirkle founded a hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana. The founders sold the hospital to Dr. James C. Willis and Dr. Joseph E. Knighton in 1928. And, in 1950, the name became the Willis-Knighton Medical Center to honor Dr. Willis and Dr. Knighton.

The medical center grew from one small hospital to a connected system of facilities to become the Willis-Knighton Health System. It has 758 beds and provides complete health care to northwestern Louisiana and parts of Texas and Arkansas. In 2022, Newsweek ranked Willis-Knighton Medical Center as the best hospital in Louisiana.

Willis-Knighton Health System is also affiliated with the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.

The Willis-Knighton Cancer Center sits on the Willis-Knighton Medical Center campus. The center treats a variety of cancers, including breast, colorectal, lung, mesothelioma, ovarian and more. On-site physician offices and laboratory services are convenient for patients and family members. The center also offers a range of support services to help patients and their families. These specialized services include counseling, nutrition, pain management and more.

Mesothelioma care at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center follows a team-based approach. As such, patients have access to a team of specialists with different focus areas. For example, a care team may include medical oncologists and surgical oncologists. These specialists focus on the individual and work on developing a custom care plan.

Individual mesothelioma care depends on the stage and location of the cancer as well as other factors. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation, surgery or other options. Doctors at Willis-Knighton Cancer Center can also discuss clinical trials available to patients.
