Jury Awards Johnson & Johnson Talc Victim a $10 Million Verdict
Written by Tara Strand on October 23, 2026
In August 2026, an Orleans Parish jury awarded $10 million in a mesothelioma talc lawsuit involving Johnson & Johnson (J&J) and other defendants. J&J was assigned more than $1.2 million of the total verdict.
A woman filed a lawsuit in 2020 after being diagnosed with mesothelioma. She had used talc products made and sold by J&J and other manufacturers for decades. After she died in May 2020, her daughters continued the lawsuit. Families may also pursue a wrongful death lawsuit after a loved one dies from mesothelioma.
The jury deliberated for 4 hours before returning a verdict finding J&J negligent and its products unreasonably dangerous.
Johnson & Johnson’s History of Asbestos Woes
The $10 million verdict in New Orleans, Louisiana, is another courtroom loss for J&J. The Louisiana talcum powder verdict follows other substantial jury awards in litigation involving J&J’s talc products. J&J has also made three unsuccessful attempts to resolve talc litigation through subsidiaries’ Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases.
The strategy, commonly called the Texas Two-Step, uses a corporate restructuring under Texas law to allocate liabilities to a separate entity. That entity then files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
According to the family’s mesothelioma attorneys, the daughters waited over 6 years for their day in court, largely because of two J&J-related bankruptcy proceedings.
- Johnson & Johnson (J&J) to Pay $1.56 Billion in Talc-Linked Asbestos Cancer Lawsuit: A Maryland jury awarded $1.56 billion in December 2025, described at the time as the largest award to an individual in litigation over J&J’s talc-based powder.
- $966 Million Verdict Against Johnson & Johnson Awarded to Family of Mesothelioma Victim in California: J&J was ordered to pay nearly $1 billion to the family of a woman who died from mesothelioma caused by contaminated talc products.
- $42M Verdict Awarded by Boston Jury in Asbestos Baby Powder Case: A Boston jury awarded more than $42 million to a man and his wife after finding J&J liable in his mesothelioma case involving talc-based baby powder.
Financial Help Available for Victims of Tainted Talc Products
Asbestos-contaminated talc has been a serious issue for years. However, it has gotten more attention recently as large companies, like J&J, have faced legal consequences. Anyone who has gotten sick from any of these products may have legal options.
Experienced lawyers at mesothelioma law firms can help people affected by asbestos-contaminated talc understand their legal options. These attorneys have experience handling asbestos cases and can help determine whether someone may qualify for compensation. People who develop mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos in baby powder or other talc products may be eligible to file a legal claim.
