Gary, Indiana

Gary is a city in Lake County, Indiana. Located along the shores of Lake Michigan and on three major Interstates, Gary is in the southeastern section of the Chicago metropolitan area, about 25 miles from downtown Chicago. With a population of about 80,000, Gary is the seventh-largest city in the state. It was founded in 1906 by the United States Steel Corporation as the home for its new plant. The city was named after the lawyer and founding chairman of U.S. Steel, Elbert H. Gary. The city of Gary is still known for its large steel mills.

Gary, Indiana's fortunes have risen and fallen with those of the steel industry. The growth of the steel industry brought prosperity to the community. However, in the 1960s, like many other American urban centers dependant on one industry, Gary experienced an economic decline. Gary's decline was brought on by increasing overseas competition in the steel industry. Today, U.S. Steel continues to be a significant steel producer, but with only a fraction of its previous employment levels.

Gary has a long history of manufacturing activity in industries known for their use of asbestos products, making asbestos exposure, and the risk of pleural mesothelioma, an ongoing concern for workers, particularly for those who worked in steel mills. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with mesothelioma in Gary, you may benefit from contacting Dr. Hedy Lee Kindler. Mesothelioma attorneys may be able to give guidance if you were exposed to asbestos in Gary, Indiana and then diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer.
