Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute serves as the central hub for cancer care within the Allegheny Health Network (AHN). The institute is headquartered at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The hospital developed cancer care expertise for over a century before becoming part of AHN.

Key milestones include:

2013: A major insurance company acquired West Penn Allegheny Health System hospitals and formed AHN. The newly acquired Allegheny General Hospital became the flagship hospital for integrated oncology and cancer care services.
2013 – 2019: AHN invested more than $300 million to grow cancer care across western Pennsylvania. The network built major new cancer centers, upgraded existing sites and expanded services.
2014 – 2023: AHN Cancer Institute partnered with Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) to expand clinical trial opportunities and bring JHM protocols to Pennsylvania. While the collaboration ended in 2023, AHN and JHM maintain ongoing clinical work together.
2020: The network opened the 84,000-square-foot AHN Cancer Institute Academic Center at the Allegheny General Hospital. This facility serves as the hub for conducting cancer research and developing new clinical approaches across the network.

Mesothelioma Care at Allegheny Health Network Cancer Institute

Patients can receive mesothelioma treatment from experienced AHN specialists. The Lung and Pleural Cancer Center of Excellence treats patients with pleural mesothelioma and other cancers affecting the lungs and pleura. The center also conducts cancer research and can connect eligible patients with clinical trials and new treatment options.

Care teams work together to review each case and create treatment plans. These teams include medical oncologists, pathologists, pulmonologists and thoracic surgeons. This team-based approach helps ensure mesothelioma patients get expert input from multiple specialists all in one place.

Treatment plans may include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, surgery, targeted therapy or a combination of these options. The care team recommends treatments based on each patient's specific diagnosis and needs.
