The city of Tacoma is the county seat of Pierce County, Washington. Located on Puget Sound, Tacoma is a port city with a population of just under 198,400. Incorporated in 1875, Tacoma was planned as the western terminus of the Northern Pacific Railroad and rail and sea transport have been integral to the city’s economy ever since. Longstanding employers include Simpson Tacoma Kraft Company, Roman Meal Bread Company, and Tacoma General Hospital. Tacoma is also home to several colleges and universities, including the University of Puget Sound and Bates Technical College.
Tacoma was first settled briefly in 1852 around a small sawmill, but the settlement was abandoned a few years later. It was not until the Northern Pacific Railroad terminus construction that a true city began to take root where sawmills, flour mills, breweries and other businesses flourished. In 1900, the Columbia Brewing Company began operations, and was soon producing 50 barrels a day. In 1916, to survive local prohibition laws, the company changed its name to Columbia Bottling Company and began making soft drinks. Beer brewing resumed in 1933, now under the name of Columbia Breweries, Inc. A final name change occurred in 1953, and the company continued as Heidelberg Brewing Company until its demise in 1979. Lumber and paper giant The Weyerhaeuser Company was also founded in 1900 and was headquartered in Tacoma until 1970. Weyerhaeuser maintains a wood products distribution center in the city. The Hooker Electrochemical Company began producing chlorine and caustic soda in Tacoma in 1929. The company was acquired by Pioneer Companies in 1997, and the plant was idled in 2002. Olin Chlor Alkali Products currently operates a bleach plant that was built in 1947. Although Tacoma has experienced some industrial decline, it has developed its arts and cultural tourism offerings to balance manufacturing losses.
