What Is the Longest Anyone Has Lived With Mesothelioma?

Written by Melanie Radliff on April 22, 2026

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure that people usually think of as fatal. Patients may feel discouraged by their doctors' initial life expectancy estimates. But survivors have beaten the odds, living decades beyond their initial prognoses. In other words, mesothelioma isn't always fatal.

These outcomes may not be standard, but they can provide hope for long-term survival. And ongoing treatment advances can reinforce that positive outlook. Keep reading for stories of mesothelioma survivors who have lived far longer than expected.

How Long Can Someone Live With Mesothelioma?

With treatment, life expectancy for mesothelioma usually ranges from months to a few years. This depends on the patient's type of mesothelioma, cancer stage at diagnosis, overall health and more. A doctor's prognosis is just a prediction based on previous patients, which doesn’t always show the full spectrum.

A doctor’s initial estimate might be accurate in some cases. But for patients who respond especially well to treatment, survival may be significantly extended.

There is no guaranteed way to live longer, but certain factors are often associated with better outcomes. Access to experienced specialists and personalized mesothelioma treatment is one of the best ways to improve survival.

Early detection can also make a difference, as treatment options may be more varied and effective. At the same time, promising therapies for late-stage mesothelioma are still advancing regularly. Long-term survival may not be the norm, but it does happen.

Heather Von St. James: 20-Year Pleural Mesothelioma Survivor

In 2005, Heather was diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma. Her initial life expectancy was 15 months. In November 2025, she reached her 20-year survival mark. Heather’s treatment, and her body’s response to it, were key. Dr. David Sugarbaker, a mesothelioma expert, treated Heather with:

Heather’s story highlights the importance of seeking care from specialists and exploring multimodal treatment plans. It also highlights advances in mesothelioma treatment. Today, total lung removal is used much less often to treat patients. Radiation is also used less and may be replaced with gentler treatments like immunotherapy.

Every patient will have a unique outcome, but Heather’s experience shows the potential for pleural mesothelioma survival.

Paul Kraus: 27-Year Peritoneal Mesothelioma Survivor

Diagnosed in 1997 with peritoneal mesothelioma, Paul Kraus is one of the longest-known survivors of this cancer. Doctors initially gave him months to live, but he survived for 27 years. His approach included a combination of medical therapies, alternative treatments and lifestyle changes.

Paul passed away in 2024 at 80 years old. His case is inspirational for many and shows how individualized care can impact survival. He was vocal about the value of conventional medicine, supportive therapies and healthy living. Paul also believed his mindset of determination and hope helped him outlive his prognosis.

Other Notable Mesothelioma Survivors

Some other patients have lived years or decades beyond their initial prognoses. These cases show that extended survival can occur across different types of cases:

  • Stephen Jay Gould – 20 years (peritoneal mesothelioma)
  • Louise “Lou” Williams – 15 years (pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma)
  • Mavis Nye – 14 years (pleural mesothelioma)
  • Paul Cowley – 14 years (pleural mesothelioma)*
  • Jim Dykstra – 13 years (peritoneal mesothelioma)*

Note: The mesothelioma patients above outlived their original life expectancies. The starred names are ongoing survivors. The others have passed from mesothelioma and other conditions. But each is an example of a patient whose experience wasn't captured by a doctor's original estimate of their prognosis.

Finding a Balance Between Optimistic and Realistic Hope

Mesothelioma is a serious and complex cancer, so it's natural to feel worried or scared. Knowing other patients have outlived their prognoses may be encouraging. Treatment is continually advancing to improve survival, quality of life and more.

No outcome is guaranteed, but research shows treatment offers the best chance of extending survival. Those diagnosed today have more options to feel hopeful about than ever before. Every patient’s situation is unique, and your doctor can help set realistic expectations while you focus on keeping a positive outlook.
