Macon, Georgia

Located on the banks of the Ocmulgee River in central Georgia, the city of Macon began as a rich agricultural center. Early settlers hailed from North Carolina and in 1823, the city was officially named after a North Carolina statesman, Nathaniel Macon. Macon is known as the “Heart of Georgia” due to its central location and role as a main transportation hub. The International Cherry Blossom Festival and historic downtown area continue to attract visitors to Macon today.

Macon’s hilly land of the Piedmont Plateau and flat terrain of the coastal plain create an ideal location for textile mills. In 1876, Bibb Manufacturing Company opened a mill in Macon and experienced substantial growth in its first twenty years in business. The company acquired additional mills over time, including Macon Knitting Company and Payne Mill, and by the 1950s Bibb Manufacturing was Georgia’s largest employer. The natural abundance of pine forests in Macon attracted other industry to the area. In the 1940s, Georgia Kraft Company, known later as Macon Kraft Company, and Armstrong Cork Company opened their doors. Armstrong remains in Macon’s Allied Industrial Park as one of the city’s major employers. In addition to Macon’s extensive manufacturing base, the city is also home to the first American college to grant degrees to women, Wesleyan College.
