Natchez is one of the oldest cities in Mississippi, and the largest in Adams County, of which it is the county seat. Natchez is the only incorporated community in Adams County, with a population of almost 18,500. With nearly 300 years of history to draw on, Natchez has made cultural tourism a centerpiece of its economy. Attractions range from steamboat cruises and casinos to historic homes and museums, including the Federal-style mansion “Rosalie” and the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. Natchez State Park and St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. The city is also home to Alcorn State University, a historically black university founded in 1871.

Natchez Overview

The history of Natchez as a settlement dates back to 1714, when it was a French trading post. In 1716, the French built Fort Rosalie to protect the post, which was the site of frequent conflict with the local Natchez peoples. After periods spent under British and Spanish colonial rule, Natchez passed into United States control in 1798 and was the Mississippi Territory’s first capital until it shifted to Jackson in 1822. Throughout the 19th century, cotton and timber were Natchez’s chief products, and river transport a major industry until the railroads were established towards the end of the century. In 1939, Armstrong Tire began producing rubber tires and was a major employer in Natchez for decades. Armstrong was sold in 1986 and continued as Fidelity Tire Manufacturing Company until 1998, when it was purchased by Titan Tire. The plant has been inactive since 2001. Other prominent Natchez manufacturers have included Johns Manville and International Paper. Manufacturing in Natchez has declined, and the city has shifted its economic focus towards tourism in recent years.
