Biloxi, Mississippi, is a coastal city located on the Mississippi Sound, separated from the Gulf of Mexico by a string of barrier islands. Biloxi, the seat of Harrison County, had a population in 2000 of around 50,600, though more recent estimates show a loss of about 10% following Hurricane Katrina. Biloxi has long been a popular summer resort, offering beaches, fishing and boating, and places of historic interest, including Beauvoir, the estate of former Confederate President Jefferson Davis. Biloxi Lighthouse, built in 1848, is one of two remaining lighthouses on the Gulf Coast. The recently opened Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art, designed by architect Frank Gehry, showcases the work of ceramic artist George E. Ohr.

Settled by the French in the late 17th century, Biloxi passed through British and Spanish control before being acquired by the United States as part of the Mississippi Territory in 1811. With Mississippi’s full admittance to the union in 1817, Biloxi began to grow into a resort community. Prosperous southerners built summer homes, and hotels and vacation cottages sprang up to accommodate seasonal visitors. Following the Civil War, rail access via the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and an active shrimping and shellfishing industry gave rise to a seafood packing industry. The first cannery opened in 1881, bringing in Polish immigrant workers from Baltimore. By the 1920s, there were more than 40 canneries in the “Seafood Capital of the World.” From 1934-1947, the Coast Guard operated an air station at Point Cadet, and in 1941, the U.S. Army Air Forces established an airfield that is the present-day Keesler Air Force Base. Though Biloxi remained a popular vacation spot through most of the20th century, legalization of gambling in the 1990s prompted the construction of more than a dozen resort casinos. Biloxi’s tourism, gambling and fishing industries were severely affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, but have been recovering in recent years.
