Portland is a city in coastal Maine, located on a peninsula extending into Casco Bay. Nearly a quarter of Maine’s population is concentrated in the Portland area. The city itself has a population of 64,000 and forms a vibrant economic and cultural hub for southern Maine. Formerly an industrial and shipping center, Portland has suffered four devastating fires over the decades, from which it takes the city motto, “Resurgam,” Latin for “I will rise again.” Today, fewer than 10% of Portland’s business are manufacturing-based; the majority are service-related, followed by retail and government. Portland has a prominent arts community, with more than 2,000 events per year. Contemporary shops and restaurants occupy the 19th-century brick buildings of historic Old Port.

Portland Overview

Portland was first settled by Europeans in 1633 as Casco. Later renamed Falmouth, it was primarily a fishing and trading community, developing as a shipping center after the Revolutionary War, when it reincorporated as Portland in 1786. When the Grand Trunk Railway was built in 1853, Canadian exporters shipped goods through Portland during the winters, rerouting around Quebec’s ice-locked ports. The Portland Company built more than 600 locomotives to service the rapidly growing city. A massive fire in 1866 destroyed most of the commercial district and left 10,000 people homeless, but, true to its motto, Portland rose again. An 1876 map of Portland shows five rail depots, a thicket of commercial wharfs, and factories producing plows, organs, soap, boots, carriages and other goods. Sugar companies such as J.B. Brown & Sons and Forest City Sugar Refinery dotted the waterfront area. Like much of New England, Portland’s manufacturing declined in the late 20th century, and it has recreated itself as a financial and cultural center, home to institutions such as TD Bank, Unum, and the Maine College of Art, and many of the city’s historic buildings have been restored.
