In 1914, Anchorage was chosen as the site for the Alaska Railroad, which was built from 1915 to 1923. The city’s economy during the 1920s was centered around the railroad. Between the 1930s and the 1950s, Anchorage experienced growth in air transportation and the military. Merrill Field opened in 1930, and Anchorage International Airport opened in 1951 making Anchorage a primary connection for transpolar air traffic between Europe and Asia. Elmendorf Air Force Base and Fort Richardson were constructed in the 1940s which created a military defense complex. On March 27, 1964, Anchorage was hit by the magnitude 9.2 Earthquake, which killed 115 Alaskans and caused $1.8 billion in damages. This was the second largest earthquake in the world. During the 1960s Anchorage focused on rebuilding after the earthquake. In 1968, oil was discovered in Prudhoe Bay, and the resulting oil boom spurred further growth in Anchorage. This oil discovery and pipeline construction boosted the economy. The 1980s was a time of economic growth thanks to the oil industry.
