Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Located approximately 40 miles southwest of Altoona and 70 miles east of Pittsburgh, Johnstown is a city in Cambria County, Pennsylvania and home to more than 23,000 people. Formally organized as a town in 1800, Johnstown is divided into many neighborhoods, each with its own unique, ethnic feel. It is a regional medical, educational, cultural, and communications center.

During the early 1800s, Johnstown became a stop on the main line of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was connected with the Baltimore & Ohio. Iron, coal, and steel rapidly became significant to the growth of Johnstown. By 1860, the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown was the leading steel producer in the United States making much of the nation's barbed wire. Twenty years after its founding, Cambria Works spanned 60 acres in Johnstown, employed 7,000, and owned 40,000 acres of valuable mineral lands in a region with a ready supply of iron, coal and limestone. The immediate post-WWII years mark Johnstown's peak as a steel maker and fabricator. Eventually increased domestic and foreign competition, coupled with Johnstown's relative distance from its primary iron ore source in the western Great Lakes, led to a steady decline in profitability. By 1982, steel companies began closing plants all over the country due largely to strict federal environmental regulations and issues associated with aging manufacturing facilities. By the early 1990s, Johnstown abandoned most of its steel production, although some limited fabrication work continues. Today, some of the major employers in the area include the American Red Cross, Gautier Steel, Berkshire Hathaway-Penn Machine, Concurrent Technologies Corporation and AmeriServ Financial.

Johnstown's history of manufacturing and industry make asbestos exposure an ongoing concern. Workers and others may be at risk to develop an asbestos-related cancer such as malignant mesothelioma. If you were exposed to asbestos in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should also consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
