Braddock, Pennsylvania

Home to just over 2,000 residents, Braddock is a borough located in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, 10 miles upstream from the mouth of the Monongahela River. Once a thriving city of 20,000 residents and a place of wealth, amenities and extensive shopping districts, Braddock was a town people flocked to from all around the region. It’s the home of Andrew Carnegie’s first steel mill and free library. The decline of the steel industry in the United States during the 1970s and 1980s, coupled with the crack cocaine epidemic of the early 1980s. nearly destroyed the community. In 1988, Braddock was designated a financially distressed municipality. However, in recent years, Braddock has initiated a number of efforts in order to restore and revitalize its community, economy and attract new residents.

Incorporated on June 8, 1867, Braddock's first industrial facility was a barrel plant. The town's industrial economy started in 1873, when Andrew Carnegie built the Edgar Thomson Steel Works on the historic site of Braddock's Field which is now known as North Braddock, Pennsylvania. It was the first steel mill using the Bessemer process in America. As of 2010, the Edgar Thomson Plant continues operation as a part of the United States Steel Corporation.
