Located at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers, the city of Charleston is the oldest city in the state of South Carolina and second largest city in the state. Charleston is known as “The Holy City” due to the number of steeples which dot the city’s skyline. Since its founding and first settlement in the 17th century, Charleston has matured into the 76th largest metropolitan area in the United States.

Charleston Overview

Charleston’s location on the Atlantic coast creates an ideal, accessible port location. Consequently, the United States Navy and other marine related business became attracted to the city. In 1901, Charleston Naval Shipyard began operating as a drydock and developed into the primary ship building and overhaul repair facility located on the west bank of the Cooper River. Charleston Naval Shipyard continued operations until the late 20th century, when it leased its facility to Detyens Shipyards, another local shipyard that has been in business since the 1960s. Detyens is still located in Charleston, and maintains three large graving docks, machine shops, and portal cranes. Other industry drawn to Charleston’s lucrative port area over the years include South Carolina Manufacturing Company, West Virginia Pulp & Paper Company, and Exxon. In the last thirty years, numerous reinvestment projects have been completed in the city, all with a focus on historic preservation. Today, Charleston is a major tourist destination and local economy remains strong with the backing of markets like information technology and higher education.

Charlestown has a very rich shipbuilding and marine history. Shipyard workers, military personnel, and manufacturing workers were often exposed to asbestos-containing products, which has made mesothelioma an issue over the years. If you have been exposed to asbestos in Charleston and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should consider contacting an asbestos law firm.
