Jamestown, New York

The city of Jamestown is located on Chautauqua Lake in New York. Named for its founder, James Prendergast, Jamestown has a population of about 31,720. Jamestown was a manufacturing town almost from the beginning, its location chosen for the abundance of wood and water power. Today, Jamestown has expanded its economic base to include retail, healthcare and education services. Major employers include diesel engine maker Cummins, Inc. and laboratory furniture maker Jamestown Metal Products. Of cultural interest are the Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, and the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center. Jamestown is also home to a professional hockey team, the Jamestown Jets.

Jamestown was first settled in 1811 by James Prendergast, who built a dam and sawmill at the lake's outlet. Wood products quickly became vital to the town's success. A treated wood ash known as "pearl ash", used in glass manufacture, lent the town its nickname, "The Pearl City." Woolens were also an important commodity, and several mills were established in the latter half of the 18th century, including Jamestown Worsted Mills, Broadhead Worsted Mills and Empire Worsted Mills. The Art Metal Construction Company was founded in 1887 to make steel office furniture and cabinetry. In 1886, Jamestown was incorporated as a city; not long afterward, the city implemented municipal power and water systems, a public library, and the WCA Hospital. The 20th century brought more new businesses, including a glass company, an airplane propeller manufacturer, an airport and a new high school. Though sustained through World War II by wartime manufacturing, industry declined in the late 20th century and urban renewal in the 1970s caused some changes to the downtown area. Recent redevelopment efforts include restoration of architecturally important building facades in the downtown area and creation of new public spaces.
