04. Asbestos Use in Lincoln

Asbestos Use in Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln workers and residents may have been exposed to asbestos and developed a related cancer, such as mesothelioma. A wide variety of services dealing with insulation, piping, old building materials and tiles are putting employees at risk of developing asbestos-related illnesses due to exposure. Service companies, such as Cornhusker Heating & Air Conditioning, may have exposed workers to asbestos at various jobsites.

In addition, several educational institutions and medical facilities in Lincoln are known sources of potential asbestos exposure, including the University of Nebraska and Lincoln General Hospital. Renovations and aging building materials at these sites are often sources of asbestos exposure. Victims have filed mesothelioma lawsuits for asbestos exposure that occurred in buildings like the Pershing Center.

Asbestos Found at the Pershing Center in Lincoln, Nebraska

The Pershing Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, served as a multi-purpose arena for concerts and other events for more than 100 years. Although the building still stands, it is no longer in use. The Pershing Center was constructed using materials containing asbestos and has potentially exposed numerous people to asbestos over the years.

One such person was a woman who worked at the Pershing Center’s concessions and catering for more than 30 years. Her job took her backstage and to the basement frequently. She remembered inhaling dust when maintenance crews removed or replaced pipe coverings in those areas. During concerts, vibrations would cause dust to fall from ceilings. The dust this woman inhaled likely contained asbestos fibers.

She was diagnosed with mesothelioma in March 2019 and died in February 2020. Her sister filed a lawsuit on her behalf claiming that asbestos exposure at the Pershing Center caused her sister’s cancer. The family was awarded a settlement to help cover medical bills, funeral costs and for her family’s suffering.

The lawsuit also asserted that the city was negligent for not properly testing the building for asbestos hazards and for not providing adequate supervision for subcontractors concerning asbestos exposure. The city plans to hire an environmental firm to remove existing asbestos material before the now defunct Pershing Center is demolished.
