Nicknamed the “City of Lakes” and the “Mill City”, Minneapolis is the largest city in Minnesota and the county seat of Hennepin County. It is situated on both banks of the Mississippi River, just north of the river’s confluence with the Minnesota River. During the 1950s and 1960s, as part of urban renewal, the city razed about two hundred buildings across twenty-five city blocks—roughly 40% of downtown.

In the late 19th century, St. Anthony Falls, the only waterfall on the Mississippi River, supplied electricity for dozens of Minneapolis flour and lumber mills. Within a short time, the city was the flour milling capital of the world; industry giants Pillsbury and General Mills are still based in Minneapolis.

Minneapolis Overview

In addition to flour milling, Minneapolis was also a hub for timber, and today is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle. The economy of Minneapolis today is largely based in commerce, finance, rail and trucking services, health care, and industry. Minneapolis is a modern city with more skyscrapers than mills. Some of Minneapolis’s major employers include University of Minnesota, Allina Hospitals & Clinics, Fairview Health Services, Wells Fargo, Hennepin County, City of Minneapolis, Xcel Energy, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, and ING Group. The Minneapolis Grain Exchange, founded in 1881, is still located near the riverfront and is the only exchange for hard red spring wheat futures and options.

Minneapolis, Minnesota’s lengthy history of industry and historic preservation makes asbestos exposure, and the risk of mesothelioma, an ongoing concern for workers and loved ones. If you were exposed to asbestos in Minneapolis and diagnosed with mesothelioma, you should consider contacting a mesothelioma law firm.
