Located in central Cobb County in northern Georgia, the community of Marietta existed as early as 1824. A decade after its first settlements were established, Marietta was officially recognized by the state and is now one of Metro Atlanta’s largest suburbs. In 1837, Marietta was chosen as the home base for the Western and Atlantic Railroad; the transportation hub would fuel the city’s economic growth for years to come.
Following the Civil War, Marietta experienced considerable growth thanks to its central location on the railroad. Paper mills, a chair company, a marble company, textile mills and machine works filled the downtown area with business. During World War II, Georgia’s largest aircraft manufacturing facility was constructed for Bell Aircraft Corporation; the 4.2 million square foot facility built and delivered 663 B-29 long-range bombers. After the military canceled the B-29 contract, the facility closed for five years before being reopened by its current operator, Lockheed Martin Aircraft. Marietta’s aircraft industry experienced further expansion in the 1950s with the opening of Dobbins Air Force Base. Today, Lockheed continues operations in Marietta and is primarily responsible for producing the C-130 Super Hercules transport and the F-22 Raptor air dominance fighter.
Marietta’s manufacturing roots, coupled with its longstanding aircraft industry, places the city in a high-risk category for asbestos exposure. If you or a loved one were exposed to asbestos in Marietta, you may be at risk to develop certain asbestos diseases including mesothelioma (a terminal cancer).
