Mesothelioma Doctors, Lawyers and Asbestos Exposure in Meriden, Connecticut

Meriden was named in 1728 and recognized as an independent town in 1806.  By the mid-1800s, Meriden experienced a rapid growth in population and was incorporated as a city in 1867.  Positioned at the "Crossroads of Connecticut", Meriden is conveniently located 20 minutes from Hartford and New Haven and two hours from either Boston or New York City.  Today, the city's manufacturing companies produce pewter, electronics, nuclear instruments, vaccines, automotive products, plastics, gaskets, communications equipment, jewelry, food, candy, tools and machines.  A few of the larger companies located in Meriden currently include: CUNO, Inc., Midstate Medical Center, and Hunters Ambulance.

Meriden remained virtually isolated from the nearby towns and communities until the improvements in transportation occurred in the early to mid-19th century which proved vital to industrial growth altering the landscape of Meriden.  Such transportation improvements included the arrival of the turnpike and development of the steam engine which made the shipment of goods to national and world markets possible.   Accordingly, more people came to Meriden, population increased, farms were more prevalent in the region, and new businesses opened to serve the needs of community.  Thus, Meriden progressively transformed from a small agricultural village to an economically diverse town, producing products that not only served the local economy in which it was produced, but also served a new type of national economy.  Howard Pratt & Company was one of the earliest examples of this as they supplied almost three-quarters of all ivory combs used in the United States.  Through the mid-20th century, factories in Meriden produced a variety of products such as belts, hoops, pewter, guns, nails, buttons, organs, and coffee grinders. However, no other commodity symbolized Meriden more than the production of silver. Silver production soon became synonymous with Meriden as companies like International Silver Company and Meriden Cutlery prospered--thus, earning Meriden the well-deserved nickname of "Silver City".   By the mid-20th century, many factories, including the International Silver, closed or moved.   A shopping mall, housing projects, and other modern buildings now occupy the places where large industrial factories once stood.

Asbestos exposure in the workplace has been a growing issue for Meriden as a result of its large manufacturing history where asbestos containing products were commonly used. Consequently, those exposed to asbestos fibers have an increased risk of developing an asbestos cancer known as mesothelioma. We provide information about treatment for mesothelioma in and around Meriden at the bottom of this page.
