Marion, Illinois

Marion is a city in southern Illinois. The county seat of Williamson County, Marion has a population of just over 17,000. Founded in 1839, and incorporated as a city in 1841, Marion is named for General Francis Marion, known as the "Swamp Fox." Marion's mix of economic sectors includes manufacturing, healthcare, warehouse/distribution, corrections and retail. Current top employers include AISIN Manufacturing, Pepsi MidAmerica, and Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Early industry in Marion was largely agricultural. In 1838, the town built its first horse-powered mill, and its first steam mill in 1845. As the county seat, Marion became a trade center fairly early. In 1872, the Carbondale and Shawneetown Railroad was completed, and the city began to grow in earnest, increasing in population from about 800 to over 7,000 between 1880 and 1910. The Pepsi MidAmerica bottling plant has been in operation since 1935. The plant has expanded several times, and in 1997, spawned the Crisp Container Corporation, which manufactures plastic bottles for the plant. Marion employers also include several government facilities. From 1941 to 1945, the government operated an ordnance factory on Crab Orchard Lake. Today the facility is part of a national wildlife refuge. The VA Medical Center has been in operation since 1942, and the United States Penitentiary in Marion was built in 1963 as a maximum-security facility, replacing the recently-closed prison at Alcatraz. Marion has also seen a number of smaller manufacturers in recent decades, including commercial bbq-oven maker Southern Pride, Excel Mining Systems and Timberline Live Pet Foods, Inc.
