Hamilton, Ohio

The city of Hamilton is the county seat of Butler County, Ohio. Hamilton has a current population of almost 62,500. Located along the Great Miami River, Hamilton became heavily industrialized during the early 20th century. Manufacturing in Hamilton has acquired a high-tech edge, with companies such as Fabridigm Inc., Connector Manufacturing Company, and Kaivac, Inc., producing specialized components and systems. Although the Great Dayton Flood of 1913 damaged much of the city, many buildings were spared, and Hamilton has three historic districts of Victorian and early 20th century structures. Hamilton is home to a branch of Miami University.

Hamilton was first incorporated in 1810, and officially became a city in 1857. Water supplied by the Great Miami River provided power for manufacturing and transportation for finished goods. Paper making became one of Hamilton's early industries. The Beckett Paper Company mill, built in 1848, is the oldest paper mill in Butler County. In 1959, the plant was acquired by Hammermill Paper Company, and is currently a division of Mohawk Fine Papers. Steel was another prominent industry. The American Rolling Mill Company (ARMCO) operated a coke and iron plant from 1937 until the early 1980s. Many of Hamilton’s factories produced parts and equipment for the military during World War II, including Liberty ship engines. Although heavy industry has declined somewhat in the 21st century, Hamilton still maintains a strong manufacturing base, including companies such as Hamilton Caster & Manufacturing Company, which has made rolling casters since 1907.
