Avon Lake, Ohio

Avon Lake is a city on Lake Erie in Lorain County, Ohio. With a population of approximately 22,500, Avon Lake is largely a suburban, professional community. Primary industries include plastics and automobile manufacturing. Avon Lake's 11.64-square miles include several beaches, bike trails, and half-a-dozen public parks. The Folger Home, built in 1902 by grape grower Thomas Folger, has been restored and preserved as a local historic landmark.

Founded in 1812, Avon Lake was a small rural village for most of the 19th century. The arrival of the railroad in 1882 and the Lake Shore Electric Railway in 1897 helped spur growth in the town. In the Beach Park lakefront area, Lake Shore Electric built a station and offices, a power plant and several outbuildings. To increase ridership on the Lorain and Cleveland Line, they also built Avon Beach Park resort and amusement park. In 1923, the property was sold to Cleveland Electric Illuminating which replaced the park and several other properties with a new coal-fired power plant in 1926. During World War II, Avon Lake began to develop as a plastics manufacturer. The B.F. Goodrich Chemical Corporation opened a plant in 1943, which produced Geon vinyl, among other products. In 1948, Goodrich created a separate Vinyl Plastics Division, which was spun off as Geon company in 1993. Today, PolyOne Corporation, the result of a consolidation of Geon and M.A. Hanna Company, continues to produce vinyl sheet, films and other specialty plastics in Avon Lake. In 1974, Ford opened its Ohio Assembly plant in Avon Lake at a former Fruehauf Truck plant.
