Durham, North Carolina

The city of Durham is the fifth largest city in North Carolina with a population of approximately 230,000 people. Located on the banks of the Eno River, the land was originally home to the Eno and Occaneechi tribes before being settled by Scots, Irish, and English colonists in the mid-1700s. Currently, Durham is home to the educational institutions of Duke University and North Carolina Central University.

Following its incorporation on April 10, 1869, the rapid expansion of Bull Durham Tobacco Company and W. Duke & Sons Tobacco Company inspired other industry development in Durham. Erwin Mills, the first mill to produce denim, and Durham Hosiery Mills, the leading hosiery maker of the time, established businesses in the community. Textile mills thrived in the city until the mid 20th century when many began to close. In 1958, Research Triangle Park was developed and became the largest research park in the United States. The high-tech research and development center is often compared to the more widely recognized Silicon Valley and is currently home to the largest IBM operation in the world. In addition to Research Triangle Park, Duke University is one of the largest Durham employers with over 39,000 workers and 13,000 students.
