Holyoke, Massachusetts is located on the Connecticut River in the southwestern part of the state. Running through the city is the Metacomet Ridge, a range of traprock peaks which includes the 1202-foot high Mount Tom. One of the first cities planned as an industrial community, Holyoke was first settled in 1745, created from the Ireland Parish section of West Springfield and incorporated in 1850. The city is named for explorer Elizur Holyoke.

Prior to 1847, Holyoke was sparsely settled, and ripe for industrial development. In 1847, construction was begun on a dam and canal system to power the new mills, and a modern grid of streets laid out. A dam failure in 1848 proved a temporary setback; a new, stronger dam was completed in 1849. A cotton mill, gristmill, smithy, tannery and other businesses vital to a growing city were established. The paper industry boomed, and at its peak, the “Paper City” could boast 25 paper mills, including Chemical Paper Company, Holyoke Paper Company, and Whiting Paper Company. The textile industry grew alongside the paper companies, and companies such as American Thread Company, Farr Alpaca Mills, and Clinton Silk Mills flourished into the early 20th century. Between 1920 and World War II, production declined, particularly in the textile industry, as mills closed by the hundreds across Massachusetts. Some industries survived the downturn, such as Worthington Pump Company and the American Pad & Paper Company, currently one of the largest producers of office supplies in the world. By the 1950s, however, when a new wave of Puerto Rican immigrants began to arrive, unemployment was high and manufacturing jobs scarce. In recent years, retail developments such as the Holyoke Mall and Holyoke Crossing shopping center have provided a boost to the local economy.

Holyoke has a substantial manufacturing legacy in the textile and paper trades, two industries known for their use of asbestos products.
