Located in the south central portion of the state, Billings is the largest city in Montana and serves as county seat of Yellowstone County. Since its founding as a railroad town in 1877, the city has earned the nickname “Magic City” due to the community’s rapid growth in its early years. In 1882, Billings became an official incorporated city.

Billings’ initial development was centered on the North Pacific and Great Northern rail lines that laid tracks through the city. The community flooded with new settlers and experienced a homestead boom unlike any other. By 1915, oil had been discovered and the first commercial well was drilled, reaching 1,900 feet deep without encountering water along the way. The presence of oil attracted several companies to Billings, including Conoco Oil Refinery (originally known as Continental Oil Company), Exxon Corporation, and Humble Oil & Refining Company.

The refineries of Exxon Montana and Conoco Montana continue operations in Billings today, making it the oil-refining capital of the northern Rockies. Billings’ present-day economy has also turned the city into the trade and distribution center for Montana, Northern Wyoming, and western portions of North Dakota and South Dakota. Major companies located in Billings include Stillwater Mining Company, Westerns Plains Machinery, Exxon/Mobil, ConocoPhillips, GM, and General Electric.

We have confirmed that Billings has numerous industrial and manufacturing sites where asbestos exposure occurred over the years. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk to develop mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer. If you were diagnosed with mesothelioma in Billings, you may benefit from seeking the advice of a mesothelioma lawyer.
