Cumberland, Maryland

Cumberland is a city in western Maryland. Located in the Appalachian region of the state, Cumberland is the county seat of Allegany County and has a current population of just over 20,850. Founded in 1787, Cumberland has been a transportation and industrial center for more than two hundred years. The coal mining, freight transport, glass-making and rubber tire industries have all had a place in Cumberland's history. Although manufacturing has declined in recent decades, the service economy has increased, placing a greater emphasis on retail, healthcare and tourism. Top employers in Cumberland include Western Maryland Health System, Hunter Douglas window treatments, and CSX Corporation.

Cumberland's earliest major industry, begun in the 1780s, was coal mining. Initially, coal was dug to supply Fort Cumberland, which occupied the site of present-day Cumberland. By 1850 there were more than two dozen coal companies, thanks to the discovery of a seam of high-quality bituminous coal at mid-century. Miners were less dependent on the coal companies than in other regions, as company stores were outlawed in 1868. When coal production declined after 1920, many of the miners were able to move to other industries. The Kelly-Springfield Tire Company opened a factory in 1921. The company was acquired in 1935 by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, which operated the Cumberland plant until 1987. Many of the city's early glass factories succumbed to fire or to the Great Depression, but later additions such as Oglebay Glass and Pittsburgh Plate Glass carried the industry into the late 20th century. Although PPG ceased manufacturing in Cumberland in 1981, the facility carried out research and development until 1992.

Cumberland's diverse history of manufacturing and heavy industry place it in a high risk category for asbestos exposure. Workers exposed to asbestos may be at risk for mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs. Mesothelioma doctors in and around Cumberland are listed at the bottom of this page.
