Harrison, New Jersey

Harrison is a town on the Passaic River in Hudson County, New Jersey. Founded in 1825 as the Township of Lodi, Harrison was permanently established in 1840. Today, Harrison has a population of just over 13,600 and occupies a 1.3 square mile area tucked into a bend of the Passaic River opposite the city of Newark. Like many of its waterfront neighbors, Harrison was heavily industrialized in the 19th and 20th centuries. Harrison currently has a diversified economic base which includes manufacturing. Notable employers include GEO Specialty Chemicals Inc., hand tool manufacturer C.S. Osborne & Company (est. 1826) and Campbell Foundry (est. 1921), which maintains headquarters in Harrison, and manufacturing facilities in nearby Kearney.

Harrison's river and rail access made it a prime location for industry and trade. In 1880, Thomas Edison established the Edison Lamp Works. A forerunner of General Electric, the Lamp Works manufactured light bulbs in Harrison until 1929. At its peak, the factory employed more than 4000 workers. The plant was acquired by the Radio Corporation of America in 1930 for manufacturing radio tubes, further expanding the original facility. The RCA plant closed in 1976 and the site is currently occupied by a shopping center. In 1888, Pechter’s Baking Company began delivering fresh breads. The company continues to operate toady as RP Baking, LLC, providing commercial baking services in the Newark area. Other companies active in Harrison in the 20th century include pet products manufacturer Hartz Mountain Company, Otis Elevator Company and mixing machine manufacturers Hockmeyer Equipment Corporation, which maintains corporate offices in Harrison, although it’s manufacturing facility closed in 1984. Although industrial activity in Harrison reached its height during World War II, the town still retains a substantial manufacturing base.
