The land occupied by modern-day Fort Smith entered the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. Fort Smith itself was founded as a military outpost in 1817. As a frontier town in a contentious border state, Fort Smith attracted all manner of drifters, refugees and outcasts, earning it a place in the legends of the "Wild West." Notable lawmen William Clayton and "Hanging Judge" Isaac Parker worked at cleaning up the town in the late 19th century, and Fort Smith eventually settled down to become a respectable manufacturing center. In 1881, Edward Ballman purchased a failing furniture company. After an 1894 merger, the Ballman-Cummings Furniture Company prospered, and Edward Ballman founded several more companies, including Fort Smith Manufacturers Co., a marketing cooperative for promoting his other furniture lines. Other companies followed in the 20th century, including Whirlpool, Rheem Manufacturing, Baldor Electric Company, Gerber Products, and Planters Co., all of which are currently active in Fort Smith. In recent years, healthcare companies such as Sparks Health System and Golden Living have also become major employers.
