Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure in Tennessee

Tennessee

Two major industries in Tennessee that have been associated with occupational asbestos exposure are paper and pulp (specifically the Evergreen Company of Memphis, formerly known as International Paper) and the production of energy. The Tennessee Valley Authority operates hydroelectric, coal and gas, nuclear, combustion turbines and wind turbines power generation facilities; all of these have contained asbestos at some point in their existence.

Industrial Exposure in Tennessee

According to Center for Health Statistics figures, as many as 3% of all occupationally related deaths in the U.S. are due to mesothelioma. A 2003 study of power plant workers in Puerto Rico showed 13% of chest x-rays as having “abnormalities” associated with asbestos disease. Additionally, the researchers noted that “...shortness of breath was commonly reported by examinees.”

Those at greatest risk for developing asbestos disease are electricians, pipefitters, boilermakers and other repair and maintenance personnel. Asbestos was used for over fifty years an insulator against heat as well as electrical current. Electric wiring, panel partitions, and electrical cloth were all insulated with asbestos.

Families of these workers are also at risk; secondary exposure has resulted from asbestos fibers that come into the home in the hair and on the clothing of such workers, which were subsequently inhaled by unsuspecting family members.

Asbetsos and the Paper and Pulp Industry

A 2002 research project in France studied 63,000 men from 13 different countries who had spent at least one year working in the pulp and paper industry between 1945 and 1996. 36% had been exposed to asbestos fibers during their working lives; fourteen of them had died from pleural cancer, or mesothelioma.

The remaining 47,000 had not been exposed to asbestos on the job. The rate of cancer among these workers was half that of those who had been exposed.

Mesothelioma Statistics in Tennessee

The majority of the Tennessee's 676 asbestos disease victims who died between 1980 and 2000 were from one of the state's four major metropolitan regions (Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga or Knoxville). Deaths from mesothelioma outnumbered those from non-malignant disease by a two-to-one margin.
