Originally known as "Prairie Rapids Crossing," the city of Waterloo is in northeastern Iowa, located along the banks of the Cedar River. Home to approximately 68,700 residents, Waterloo occupies a total area of 62 square miles and serves as the county seat of Black Hawk County. Waterloo is recognized for being one of Iowa’s foremost historic towns, as well as for its agricultural development, engineering and cultural diversity. Since its incorporation in 1868, Waterloo experienced two long periods of accelerated growth. The first period began in 1895 and lasted through 1915. During this time, Waterloo’s population increased from 8,490 to 33,097; and the city’s manufacturing, rail transportation and wholesale operations flourished. Two notable companies during this period were Waterloo Gasoline Traction Engine Company and Rath Packing Company moved to Waterloo. Between 1925 to 1960, Waterloo’s population increased from 36,771 to 71,755. The city’s major employers throughout the first two-thirds of the 20th century was the Illinois Central Railroad and the Maytag-Mason Motor Company. Today, some of the large employers in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area include John Deere, Covenant Medical Center, and Tyson Fresh Meats.
