Asbestos Exposure, Mesothelioma Doctors and Lawyers in Augusta, Maine

Augusta is located on the Kennebec River in central Maine, between Portland and Bangor. Designated the state capital in 1827, Augusta is also the population center of the state, with roughly 18,500 residents. In addition to being the seat of government, Augusta is also home to the University of Maine at Augusta, which offers a range of degree and professional certification programs. Augusta's downtown area is lined with elegant 19th-century homes and office buildings. Many of the latter have been refitted as modern storefronts, while retaining the charm of the original architecture. The sprawling cotton mills that once lined the riverfront are gone and today Augusta's largest employers are the Central Maine Power Company and MaineGeneral Health.

Augusta was incorporated in 1797. In 1837, the Kennebec Dam Company completed the Edwards Dam, which would provide water power for a series of sawmills and textile mills. The largest, and longest-lived, of the textile mills was the Edwards Manufacturing Company, which operated from 1882 to the 1980s. In 1851, the Kennebec & Portland Railroad came through, and Augusta developed into a true industrial town, producing lumber, broom handles, stone cutters' tools, shoes, and furniture. From 1869 to 1942, Augusta was a major publisher of subscription magazines. Circulation was so high that a new post office was built in 1890 to handle the volume of shipments, and periodical publishing still accounts for a portion of Augusta's economic base.
