Klamath Falls, Oregon
Located in the south central region of Oregon, Klamath Falls is situated on the southern shore of the Upper Klamath Lake and the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. The community was known as Linkville, after the Link River on whose falls this city sits, until the 1890s when the name was changed to Klamath Falls. In 1905, Klamath Falls was incorporated as a city and today is home to more than 21,000 residents. Klamath Falls is in Klamath County which boasts a plethora of natural and cultural wonders such as Crater Lake and Mt. Shasta.
Klamath Falls was known for its forests and rangeland but the region was too remote from major markets to make money. However, with the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1909, timber harvesting through the use of the railroad ignited a sustained period of growth throughout Klamath County which lasted through the first few decades of the 20th century. In the 1920s, Klamath Falls was recognized as the fastest growing city in Oregon. Dozens of lumber mills cut fir and pine lumber, and the industry flourished until the late 1980s when the Northern Spotted Owl and other endangered species were driving forces in changing western forest policy. In recent years, Klamath Falls has experienced a new boom with the construction of many large housing developments and new businesses locating in the area. Major local employers include Jeld Wen, Collins Products, Air National Guard, Oregon Institute of Technology, Columbia Forest Products, and Sky Lakes Medical Center.
