Mesothelioma and Asbestos in Arizona

Arizona

Tucson, Arizona has been home to a large asbestos industry since the middle of last century. Starting in the 1950s and 60s, American Asbestos Mines, part of Arizona Asbestos Inc., operated asbestos mines. Today the EPA-accredited Asbestos Institute, Inc. in Phoenix works to train and certify those in asbestos management and abatement.

Industry and Asbestos in Arizona

Three main industries in the state of Arizona have handled asbestos. They include:

  • Solomon’s Mines, a vermiculite facility
  • 7 major power-generation stations
  • 3 major copper-smelting companies

W. R. Grace & Company, infamous for their asbestos mines and the people of Libby, Montana, also operated a vermiculite packing plant in Phoenix called Solomon’s Mines, Inc. The vermiculite, itself harmless, was contaminated with Amphibole asbestos from the Libby mines, and thus any mine workers, their families and those who lived in the area from 1964 until 1992, as well as current residents, are at risk for asbestos fiber exposure. Employees of these and other similar industries prior to 1990 are advised to have regular checkups at any of the mesothelioma clinics in their area in order to check for and catch asbestos diseases early.

Asbestos Deaths in Arizona

Starting in 1979 and twenty years following, over 500 Arizona residents were diagnosed with and died from asbestos cancer, with the highest death rates in Maricopa County and the lowest in La Paz County. Nearly 60% of these developed mesothelioma.

Laws Related to Asbestos in Arizona

Laws require that reports of diagnoses of asbestosis and mesothelioma must be made at the local level, and process up from there. Enforcement codes also state that employers need to provide employees with a recognizable-hazard-free work environment and job, as well as meet occupational safety and health standards. A mesothelioma lawyer can assist in these reports.
