Stamford is a coastal city in Fairfield County situated on Long Island Sound. It is bordered by Darien, Greenwich, and New Canaan, Connecticut, as well as Pound Ridge, New York. Incorporated in 1893, Stamford is currently home to more than 118,000 residents making it the fourth largest city in the state and the eighth largest city in New England. In the early part of the 20th century, Stamford progressed from a factory hub to a research center. Rich Company, resulted in a downtown with many high rise office buildings including One Landmark Square, the GTE building (now One Stamford Forum), the Marriott Hotel, and the Stamford Town Center. Through the years, other developers have joined in building up the downtown, a process that continued intermittently, through the 1980s, 1990s and into the new century. Stamford is home to the headquarters of a number of Fortune 500, Fortune 1000 and Courant 100 corporations, including World Wrestling Entertainment, Time Warner Cable, and Pitney Bowes. Recently, however, several large corporations have moved offices outside of the city due to the high rental cost, including Xerox, International Paper, GE Capital, and Clairol. Nevertheless, Stamford is an economically sound community and continues to pursue development initiatives to both attract and retain industries and corporations. By the end of the 20th century, the city emerged as America's third largest corporate headquarters community.
