Bloomington, Indiana

Known as the "Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana", Bloomington is a city in and the county seat of Monroe County. The city is located approximately 50 miles south of Indianapolis, occupying 19.9 square miles and home to more than 80,000 people. Bloomington was established in 1818 by a group of settlers from Kentucky, Tennessee, the Carolinas and Virginia. The settlers were so impressed with "a haven of blooms" they called it Bloomington. Bloomington is also the home of Indiana University, one of the oldest and largest state universities in America.
In the early years, farming, limestone extraction and timbering for the furniture industry were anchors of Bloomington’s economy. The 1900's brought many changes and growth to the area such as improved roads, delivery mail service, and another railroad. The limestone industry continued to grow. In the 1940s, RCA made radios at a plant in Bloomington. After World War II, they built televisions sets. Other businesses that located plants in Monroe County and prospered after the war were General Electric, Westinghouse, and Otis Elevator. During the late 1950s and the 1970s, some of the older business closed. The limestone companies also suffered during this time. In 1965, College Mall opened and brought a new way of shopping to town. Since the 1980s, the economy has shifted toward high tech, entrepreneurship, nonprofit, service, and governmental employment. Some of Bloomington’s major employers in Bloomington include Indiana University Bloomington, IU Health Bloomington Hospital, General Electric, and Baxter BioPharma Solutions.
