Bakersfield, California

The City of Bakersfield is the county seat for Kern County, California. It is located at the southern end of the San Joaquin Valley, approximately halfway between Fresno and Los Angeles. Over the past 30 years, the population has almost tripled, from roughly 105,000 in 1980 to 333,000 in 2009, making Bakersfield the 11th fastest growing city in California. Farming and oil drilling and processing account for the largest share of Bakersfield's economy. The city is also home to several museums and colleges, including California State University. Bakersfield offers a variety of cultural events, many reflecting the ethnic traditions of residents, including a Scottish Games, the Kern County Basque Festival, and Native Gatherings sponsored by the university's Indigenous Native American Club.
Gold was discovered along the Kern River in 1851, and settlers eventually made their way through the El Tejon Pass into the valley. Named after an early settler, Colonel Thomas Baker, who was known for his hospitality in letting travelers camp on his lands, Bakersfield was permanently settled in 1858. In 1869, a town plan was laid out, and Bakersfield incorporated as a city in 1873. Oil was discovered in the San Joaquin Valley in 1865, drawing immigrants from Texas, Louisiana and other oil states to work in the oilfields and refineries. Bakersfield's mild climate and long growing season produced crops ranging from citrus fruits to nuts. In 1916, a Mosquito Abatement District was established to control malaria outbreaks. The oil industry brought prosperity to Bakersfield, and by the late 19th and early 20th centuries, local businesses included the Bakersfield Iron Works, Electric Water Company, Kern County Land Company, and several large, elegant hotels. A significant earthquake in 1952 destroyed many of Bakersfield's historic structures, and the recent population growth has meant a rise in construction.
