Mesopheloma
Mesopheloma is a common misspelling of the word "mesothelioma." Asbestos exposure is the primary cause of this aggressive form of asbestos cancer. A hazardous mineral known for its superior insulating properties, asbestos was used throughout the first 75 plus years of the twentieth century in over 5,000 products. These products included construction products such as insulation, roofing material, ceiling and floor tiles, drywall, and many more. People are at risk for developing mesothelioma cancer when they are exposed to airborne asbestos fibers that they inhale. These inhaled fibers settle in the chest area and can then cause different forms of mesothelioma disease to develop such as peritoneal mesothelioma or malignant pericardial mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma treatment, as for most cancers, generally involves chemotherapy and radiation. While significant medical advances have been made, this type of cancer continues to be difficult to treat. Upon receiving a mesothelioma diagnosis a victim’s life expectancy can be fairly short, but new drugs like Alimta® and Carboplatin are providing increased hope and optimism to many.
