Granite City, Illinois
Granite City, located in Southern Illinois, is a city in Madison County with a population nearing 32,000. Founded in 1896 to be a planned company city, Granite City was named by the Niedringhaus brothers who operated a graniteware kitchen supplies factory. Granite City features thirteen parks, Wilson Park being the most notable; and is home to The Southwestern Illinois College Campus (SWIC).
During the boom of the Industrial Revolution, Granite City became a prime location for industrial growth due to its proximity and accessibility to the Mississippi River. It was during this time that industrialists like the Niedringhaus brothers founded their operations for the St. Louis Stamping Company that would eventually become the National Enameling and Stamping Company (NESCO). Other notable industries in Granite City at the time were Markle Lead Works, American Steel Foundry, and the Granite City Steel Works which today is part of U.S. Steel. By 1931, Commonwealth Steel plant, producer of locomotives, closed due to the economic strain caused by the Great Depression. By the end of the 1950s, the National Enameling & Stamping Company, which at its peak of success occupied approximately 1,250,000 square feet and employed more than 4,000 people, would close as graniteware is replaced by aluminum cookware, Pyrex, Corning Ware and stainless steel. During the 1970s, the city's downtown area, home to much of Granite City's industry, began to experience urban decay as many commercial buildings became vacant. More recently, revitalization efforts have been made to revive the downtown area. Some of large manufacturers operating in Granite City today include U.S. Steel, Capri-Sun, Kraft Foods, and ADM Packaged Oils.
