Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Baton Rouge is the capital city of Louisiana. Located on the Mississippi River, Baton Rouge is an active shipping port and a major industrial center, with a current population of just over 229,500. Because Baton Rouge is the furthest inland port on the river which can accommodate deep-water vessels, goods are also transferred from the port by rail, pipeline and barge. Baton Rouge has a stable economic mix, with top employers including industrial services provider Turner Industries, ExxonMobil, and Louisiana State University.

Louisiana entered the Union in 1812, and Baton Rouge was incorporated five years later. During the 19th century, Baton Rouge had a thriving riverboat trade, although industrial and economic development was interrupted by the Civil War, and the temporary relocation of the state capital. During the 20th century, Baton Rouge became a center for petroleum, salt and natural gas processing. The Standard Oil Company built a refinery in 1909, which is currently operated by ExxonMobil. The expansion of industry also touched off a construction boom. Companies like Shaw Group, Turner Industries and Kaiser Engineers built oil refineries and aluminum plants, among other structures. Easy access to petroleum by-products brought a host of chemical and polymer companies, including Copolymer Corporation (1943), Dow Chemical, W.R. Grace (1955), DuPont and Borden Chemical. Despite periodic setbacks from flooding and hurricanes, Baton Rouge continues to be a strong industrial and port city, with a vigorous construction trade.
