Dr. Larry R. Kaiser
Educational Background
Dr. Larry R. Kaiser began his medical career after earning a Bachelor's degree from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. He then stayed in New Orleans to attend Tulane University School of Medicine to complete his medical degree. Dr. Kaiser then moved west to the University of California, Los Angeles to complete his General Surgery Residency and earn his Fellowship in Surgical Oncology. He then went to the University of Toronto in Ontario, Canada to complete a Cardiovascular Surgery Residency as well as a Thoracic Surgery Senior Residency.
Professional Highlights
In 1985 Dr. Kaiser became a Surgeon at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City and worked there for three years. He then left to become a member of the Washington University School of Medicine Faculty in St. Louis, Missouri. He left the Washington University School of Medicine in 1991 for a career at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His first position was as the Chairman of the Department of Surgery and he went on to become The John Rhea Barton Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief. He also served as the Principal Investigator of the University of Pennsylvania Health System's grant from the National Emphysema Treatment Trial, working on the Executive Committee for the trial as well as heading the Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratory. His research interests there included the treatment of malignant mesothelioma, lung cancer and mediastinal tumors. Dr. Kaiser also helped to develop the technique of video thoracoscopy where he designed and patented a set of instruments. In 2008, Dr. Larry Kaiser was named President of The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston where he currently works.
Publications
Dr. Kaiser has authored and co-authored over 300 scholarly publications. His, "Cutting Edge: Regulatory T Cells from Lung Cancer Patients Directly Inhibit Autologous T Cell Proliferation," was published in The Journal of Immunology and his, "Advances in the Treatment of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma," was published in the Chest Journal. Dr. Kaiser has also written a number of books including Mastery of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Atlas of General Thoracic Surgery. Dr. Kaiser also serves on the editorial board of the Annals of Surgery, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Surgical Oncology and Contemporary Surgery.
Affiliations
Dr. Kaiser also belongs to a number of professional organizations including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery and the Cardiothoracic Surgery Network. He is also a member of the General Thoracic Surgical Club as well as The Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
