Renton, Washington

Renton is a city on Lake Washington in King County, Washington, with a population of just over 90,900. Founded around 1857 as a coal mining town, Renton has become a major aerospace and truck manufacturing center. In recent decades, technology companies and large retailers such as IKEA have also located here. Among the city's top employers are Boeing, Inc., PACCAR, Inc. and hobby game designers Wizards of the Coast. Renton is also home to Valley Medical Center, first established in 1947 as a temporary hospital to accommodate wartime expansion.

By the time of its incorporation in 1901, Renton was well established as a timber and coal producer. In 1908, the Seattle Car Manufacturing Company built a new factory in Renton which would replace their West Seattle plant, which had been destroyed in a fire. After a 1917 merger, the company became Pacific Car and Foundry Company, producing tanks during World War II. Today, as PACCAR, Inc., the company manufactures Kenworth trucks at its Renton plant. The Lake Washington Ship Canal was completed in 1916, lowering the water level of Lake Washington and reducing flooding of the Cedar and Black Rivers. During World War II, an aircraft factory was constructed on reclaimed lakefront land to build B-29 Superfortress bombers. Wartime production at Boeing and PACCAR, which manufactured tanks, brought thousands of new residents to the city. Renton Hospital, the predecessor of Valley Medical Center, was built in 1947, and replaced by a newer facility, dubbed Valley General Hospital, in 1969. After the war, plant operator Boeing reopened the factory to produce commercial aircraft. Today, Boeing is Renton's largest employer, producing its model 737 airplanes. The company's service and financial divisions are headquartered in Renton as well.
